A Child’s Fascination with Things Electronic

pink baby shoesMy 2-year-old granddaughter can’t put on her shoes very well. That’s putting it kindly. She’s a bull-headed little tyke, though, so she perseveres until I can’t stand it any longer and give her a “help-me-up.” That’s usually a couple of minutes into the ordeal, because we need to be somewhere. Time available is in inverse proportion to her bull-headedness. (more…)

America the Beautiful

flag and sunsetHave you ever driven to a destination and didn’t remember the drive? That was me this past week — on July 3, to be exact. I got to work, thought about the route just traveled and realized that I didn’t remember a thing about it. I was safe, I guess due to subconscious thought, because my conscious mind was on “America the Beautiful.” It always happens this time of year as the celebration of Independence Day deepens my convictions regarding patriotism and freedom. Man, do I love this country.

The song “America the Beautiful” is one of the best, and in my humble opinion, it should not be allowed to be sung by anyone other than Ray Charles. Mr. Charles is no longer with us. Thankfully, www.youtube.com has multiple renditions, none of which are tired or trite. As long as YouTube exists, there will be no other voice or soul that extracts such meaning from the lyrics. All songs have words, but some songs you feel. I feel this one.

Driving to work, I was singing and sounding great (in my mind). Ray and I were a duet, both of us pouring out the emotion that made for no conscious thought as to what I was doing. But for God’s blessings, I made it to work. I sang the song up the steps into my office until I could log on and watch a video of “The Man” himself doing his timeless, soulful version. If you’ve got five or seven minutes, do yourself a favor and log on.

Oh beautiful, for heroes proved,

In liberating strife,

Who more than self our country loved,

And mercy more than life,

America, America, may God thy gold refine,

Till all success be nobleness,

And every gain divined.

You want the definition of Independence Day, read these beautiful lyrics.  Long before you get to the second verse (“…spacious skies, amber waves of grain, purple mountains majesty, above the fruited plains…”), take a good, hard look at that poetic first verse.

Independence Day is about freedom. Freedom achieved through heroes that liberated us from strife. Heroes that loved our country more than themselves and wanted mercy for us all more than their own life.

When Ray sings it, he has church. “America, America, God shed His grace on thee…”

That’s a prayer where I come from. More than ever, I wish Ray was alive to remind us just one more time about how beautiful America really is — live and unfiltered. Church.

Listen. Please Listen.

listen spelled in scrabble tilesDr. Stephen Covey, best known for the best-selling book The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, is also noted for saying something that may be the crux of the problem in the world today. I’ll narrow that down some — it’s probably the issue at hand in our country for sure. It shows up in at least two places: on college campuses and certainly as a prevailing concern in business. Bet You I Don’t Forget Next Year

felt hearts on clotheslineTime marches on. I’m older, things ache and my eyes aren’t as good. Patience is tested more often, belts don’t stretch as far and I have an uncontrollable desire to wear plaids with stripes. There are issues I remain passionate about, and there are those that once moved me that today don’t even register. Yes, time marches on. (more…)

Add That to the List — Happy Thoughts

ice cream sundaeEvery once in a while, we celebrate in a big way. A night out on the town. On our radar is a dinner that includes as many courses as reasonable. Think appetizer, entree and dessert as the primary goal. Dessert is usually shared as a result of the loaf of bread consumed while waiting for appetizers. The bread is of the fancy kind, and we just can’t seem to stop ourselves. It almost always happens that way.    (more…)

Respect

RESPECT Scrabble TilesRespect for one another has eroded as if an avalanche has struck the mountainside. I can’t believe how far. So far, in fact, that love, kindness and respect for each other is questioned. Respect is so out of the norm that people ask, “Why are you being nice to me?” How sad. Being respectful of another person is now taken as a ruse of some sort. In other words, the expectation is now comments that are something in the way of disrespect. I’m thinking out loud here, but when love, kindness and good deeds are no longer the expectation, how slippery does the slope become? (more…)
