visitors at beachSelfishness is a horrible character trait.  It’s one we perfect in our teen years, and sadly it hangs around to some degree throughout our adult life.  The seriously selfish usually serve to destroy marriages, relationships, and the workplace culture when allowed to go unchecked.  Add selfishness to being stubborn and you have the formula for disaster.  Give a little for the good of all that you meet.  It will make the world a better place.  (more…)

Find the humor

dog wearing funny eyeglasses with fake eyebrows and noseI asked a friend of mine at church the other day how she liked her coffee.  She replied “with lipstick.”  It caught my funny bone and I busted a gut laughing.  In humor, timing is everything.  Her response was perfectly timed.  What also made it funny was that she did not intend for it to be funny.  Her wit was spontaneous—the best kind.  My guess is that she wouldn’t or couldn’t tell a joke—it’s not her style. It’s all relative.

binoculars with different filtersIt’s all relative.  I’m tall to anyone under six feet, but to a guy north of seven—not so much.  To somebody who doesn’t work out, I’m a gym rat.  To a triathlete, I’m a cupcake.  I’m a pretty good dancer at the family wedding reception, but to the folks who do it for a living, I look like I’m shuffling at a bus stop in shirt sleeves in the dead of winter. three antique keys on black backgroundI’m a fan of three keys to success:  discernment; deductive reasoning; and the newly added third “D”—discipline.  I’ve talked about two of them over time, maybe even discipline has been discussed, but never have I hooked them all together to create the “Triple D” to success. ruler and notebook on deskBig news! No, not that Taylor Swift released her new album. No, not that the Cardinals are barely above .500. No, not that one lady won north of $750 million. Nope! The big news that should be grabbing all of the headlines is that most of the smart kids are not in America.  (more…)

Eclipse Fever? Not So Much.

solar eclipseThe eclipse is over. It came and went last Monday, August 21. Like an ice cream cone at a summer picnic in August, before you could get your glasses adjusted and look to the heavens, it was gone. Nothing more than a summer memory. (more…)

blank name tagI was speaking with a confidant the other day — i.e., someone you can confide in, someone you trust with secrets that, if leaked to the world, would embarrass you and your family for generations. In other words, this person knows stuff that no one else knows, like the time that…never mind. (more…)

The Real Pioneers

Life-Changing Creations

man holding iphoneWhat does one get for a 10-year anniversary gift? Well, traditional giving acknowledges that tin or aluminum is the norm. Tin? Aluminum? Tenth anniversaries are a long way from the gold of 50 or the diamond of 75, but tin? Oh, well. I’m sure Tiffany’s can do something with tin or aluminum and charge an arm and a leg for it. Such is the world of capitalism. I love it.   (more…)

pink baby shoesMy 2-year-old granddaughter can’t put on her shoes very well. That’s putting it kindly. She’s a bull-headed little tyke, though, so she perseveres until I can’t stand it any longer and give her a “help-me-up.” That’s usually a couple of minutes into the ordeal, because we need to be somewhere. Time available is in inverse proportion to her bull-headedness. (more…)
