Love Is Awesome No Matter What Day It Is!

This blog isn’t about the Credit Union.  It’s about love.  Well, maybe it is about the Credit Union, because we surely do love our members!

Happy Valentine’s Day to you and yours!  If you are reading this on Monday, February 14, this is a timely message; the rest of the week – not so much.  So let’s talk about something that is always timely without the need for the not-so-subtle prodding of a Hallmark holiday: love.  Whatever the day, love is awesome.  Yet, there are millions of people hesitant to utter this word or, worse yet, string those three little words together: I love you.  Most guys are gagging right now.

I’m not a therapist, psychologist or whatever profession deals with the insecurities, inequities and the downside of love.  But the fact is that I don’t have much reservation in using the phrase “I love you.”  My wife, my kids, my sisters and brothers and a bunch of relatives far out on the “family tree limbs,” and even those not found on the family tree at all, regularly hear “I love you” from me.  The words never get old.  That’s not the case with many out there.  They claim to be emotionally vulnerable when it comes to the utterance of “I love you.”  Well, I guess the feeling is that you’re in a compromised state unless someone comes right back at you with an “I love you.”  Oh well, it happens (or doesn’t).

The fact that somebody might not love you back shouldn’t diminish your feelings toward that person, should it?  I love all of our members and have for 24 years, and have yet to get a response back.  If we worried less about reciprocity and more about making someone happy and spreading joy, we’d be a lot better off.  Maybe, just maybe, some of our societal ills would be lessened by the more regular occurrence of “I love you.”  I’m just saying.

There are those who disguise it.  They sign cards with the “lots of love” or “hugs & kisses.”  Worse yet, there’s the Morse code version: “XOXOXO.”  How about the response from the so-called romantic who hits you with a “right back at you” or how about the deeply felt “ditto”?  When somebody violates our comfort area by actually telling us “I love you,” there are many who look for a rock to crawl under.  What in the world?

Here’s how I hook it together and justify my comfort with “I love you.”  We’re a community full of working parts.  Our success comes from each of us contributing to the whole.  We need each other, and our combined strengths move us to a better place.  Now, if we’re a community, then we are all neighbors.  And it says in the Bible that we should love our neighbor as we love ourselves.  I pretty much (most days) love me, so therefore I must love you too.  Too simple?  Not really.  Actually, it’s pretty deep.

LOVE…a wildly misunderstood although highly desirable malfunction of the heart which weakens the brain, causes eyes to sparkle, cheeks to glow, blood pressure to rise and lips to pucker. Happy “LOVE” day to everyone!
